Penelope isn’t one of my favourite movies because of the romance; it’s because it’s about a girl who takes control of her life and follows her heart, regardless of the consequences.

She is her own person and ultimately doesn’t let other people (be it family or otherwise) make decisions for her. She gets her happy ending because she works for it and doesn’t let fear stop her from putting herself out into the world and exposing her true face- and would you look at that, the city loved her.

Penelope is a powerful character, and her relationship with Max/Johnny is just a bonus.
